The New Jeep Gladiator 4xe is a Plug-In Hybrid with Great Acceleration

The Jeep brand has continued to expand its lineup of rugged SUVs, jeeps, and trucks. The Jeep Gladiator, the pickup version of the popular Jeep Wrangler, now has a new plug-in hybrid model for our neighbors in Santa Monica, CA. All the details still need to be finalized at press time, but we can make some inferences based on the current gasoline-only Jeep Gladiator models and the Jeep Wrangler.

The Jeep Gladiator shares much in common with the Jeep Wrangler from which it was derived. It is a four-door, mid-sized pickup built with the DNA of the Jeep Wrangler. You can remove the roof and doors and fold the windshield down. It has standard four-wheel drive and a suspension built for off-roading. It has a 5.5-foot truck bed and is longer in the wheelbase than the Jeep Wrangler. The Jeep Gladiator has skid plates, axle ratios, approach/departure angles to aid in rock crawling, a slatted grill, and healthy ground clearance. It also has a better towing capacity than the Jeep Wrangler.

Performance

Based upon the performance of the Jeep Wrangler 4xe, we expect the horsepower from both electric motors and the turbo-four to be considerably more than the gasoline-only Jeep Gladiator. With the Max Towing package outfitted on the Jeep Gladiator 4xe, we expect it to tow larger trailers at around the same weight capacity as the current gasoline-only Jeep Gladiator. The MPGe level will likely be high, and the total gasoline and electric miles range should be above the mid-300-mile range.

Engine

The new Jeep Gladiator 4xe, pronounced "four by e," will likely have the same plug-in hybrid engine as the Jeep Wrangler 4xe. The latter has two electric motors, a lithium battery, and a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The combined horsepower is impressive. A Level two charger will likely be able to top off the electric battery in two hours or less, as is the case with the Jeep Wrangler 4xe.

Interior

Like the Jeep Wrangler, the Jeep Gladiator 4xe is designed to be durable. You start it up with a waterproof push button. Heated front seating is available. Because its wheelbase is longer than the Jeep Wrangler, the former has more legroom for your rear-seat passengers. You can seat up to five passengers. Cubbies and compartments abound, including one under the rear seating area. You can stow and lock the rear seating as desired.

Technology

The new Jeep Gladiator has a standard infotainment touchscreen with Apple and Android connectivity. Navigation services are available. A subwoofer and a wireless speaker that can be removed and placed in a camp are also available. USB ports are standard, and a 120-volt outlet is available. A front-facing camera helps when the hood is higher in the air and going over obstructions. The front-facing camera lets you see your destination without frequently exiting the vehicle.

Safety

The Jeep Gladiator has safety features, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear parking sensors.
